What is Cramming?
Cramming occurs when a company puts charges on your phone bill without your permission. These charges may be related to phone service like voicemail or ring tones or have nothing to do with phone service, such as tickets or club memberships.
How will I know if I've been Crammed?
Cramming may be hard to spot because the bill could be from a company that you recognize (e.g., your local phone company, wireless company, or long distance company). But, if you have been crammed, you will see one or more charges on that bill for items or services you did not purchase. The company that charged you may be different than your phone company.
Read your bill carefully – look for charges for purchases you didn't make.
What should I do if I've been Crammed?
- Ask members in your household if they ordered the product or service that appears on the bill and forgot to tell you.
- Immediately contact the phone company that sent you the bill. Tell them that you are disputing the charge. The company will investigate and should tell you what it finds out within 30 days.
- Call or write to the company that you believe crammed you to dispute the charge and ask for your money back. If you write, send a certified return receipt letter.
- You do not have to pay for the products or services you did not order. But make sure that you pay all of the other charges on the phone bill, or the phone company may turn off your phone service.

If your home wireline phone has no dial-tone or there’s static on the line, try unplugging all phones, wait five minutes and then reconnect one to see if the problem clears.
